"Somewhere only we know..." - Where to go for a family photoshoot

October 10, 2016

If you recognise the song* then hopefully, like me, you love the lyrics. As a lifestyle family photographer, based in the West Midlands, I'm lucky to visit lots of wonderful places as part of my job with Shropshire and Staffordshire right on the doorstep.

I walked across an empty land
I knew the pathway like the back of my hand
I felt the earth beneath my feet
Sat by the river and it made me complete

A few months ago I was talking to someone who is having a family photoshoot with me later on in the year and we started chatting about  what location she wanted to use for it. I asked her if there was a favourite place, somewhere that she likes to go with her family

I came across a fallen tree
I felt the branches of it looking at me
Is this the place we used to love?
Is this the place that I've been dreaming of?

Her answer was that there is somewhere very special to her, somewhere that brings back lots of memories, but it's not somewhere local, it's from her own childhood. She described to me visits to her Grandparents house in Yorkshire when she was a little girl and walking though the woods to a glade, the kind of place where I would imagine a young child would believe that fairies and elves might live. Although I've never seen this place it instantly conjured images of how it might like

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go
Somewhere only we know?
Somewhere only we know?

This took me back to my own childhood in Sheffield, right on the edge of the Peak District and visits to a place called Padely Gorge, not too far from Hathersage.

When I ask my Mum about it she doesn't seem to think we went there that many times but it definitely left a lasting impression on me. You start off by walking down a grassy bank from a road that cuts through quite a wild, exposed landscape. As you drop down it feels more sheltered and then you reac some oak trees that are either side of a little stream. Across the stream are stepping stones which are always going to be a fun challenge for any little boy or girl!! Just hearing the name of it takes me right back to my childhood and hoping across them to the other side or sometimes misjudging it and ending up in the stream!

Oh simple thing where have you gone?
I'm getting old and I need something to rely on
So tell me when you're gonna let me in
I'm getting tired and I need somewhere to begin

As my own children get older and we start to go out exploring there are places we visit that I know we'll return to again and again. I want our daughters to grow up with happy memories of childhood and to have places that are really special to them. That time when they are little seems to pass all too quickly so I want to make the most of it with them now and create similar memories that perhaps one day they'll recount to their own children

And if you have a minute why don't we go
Talk about it somewhere only we know?
This could be the end of everything
So why don't we go?
So why don't we go?

I'm sure that if you're a parent yourself that you have your own favourite places to take your children and we are very lucky that we have wonderful green spaces within the city and many more to visit in the country. Perhaps it's one of the places featured in these photographs?!
